In 1998, the Queensland Government commissioned an Inquiry into the abuse of children in Queensland institutions, which became popularly known as the Forde Inquiry. During the period of its operation from September 1998 to May 1999, over 300 people provided information to the Inquiry. The Inquiry found that abuse had occurred and that children had suffered, and continue to suffer, the legacy of pain throughout their lives.

The Forde Foundation was set up to make grants available to help former residents overcome the disadvantages they now experience as a result of childhood treatment that affected their education, employment, health and general well being.

The Foundation can provide assistance through a grants program, which targets financial support to:

  • Individuals – offering financial support to individuals in the areas of education, employment/training, dental, and personal development
  • Non-Government Organisations – offering grants to non-government organisations to deliver innovative programs and projects which promote general wellbeing and builds community connectedness for people who experienced childhood abuse in an institutional setting including out-of-home care.
